In 1986, I was visiting a small hotel on the island of Nevis. Sitting next to me at the bar one night was an Englishman who happened to be the head of the Caribbean Philatelic Bureau. I had a collection of photographs of my paintings along and showed them to him. We spoke of my interest in birds and my relationship with the man who made rum in St. Croix. I was then commissioned to paint two series of postage stamps for the British Government. One being the History of Rum Making for the BVIs and the other Birds of Prey for St. Vincent.

The paintings had to be a very specific size of about 9 inches by 6, the medium had to be gouache and I had to set all the lettering properly. In the end, they had to be okayed by the Queen…so I was told.
